Gorati Venkanna is a people’s poet and a nature poet par excellence in the newly formed state of Telangana. He is a vaggeyakara (poet-singer) in the true sense of the word in the age old Telugu tradition of Annamayya, Tyagaraja, Seshappa Kavi, Dunna Iddasu and Vepuri Hanumaddas.

In his hands language takes infinite forms in the ease, like black soil does in the hands of a seasoned potter. His language is aural and visual. Gorati’s poems also throw light on his philosophy of life. He is a mystic and a sufi in his world view. Kalagnani Veerabrahmam and Vemana influenced his social outlook. In his poetry we find deep influence of great romantic poets such as Devulapally Krishna Sasrty, Nanduri Subba Rao and Konakalla Venkataratnam. Yakshaganam. Initially, he learnt his craft from his father Narsimha, a ballad singer.
