Festival Director's Note
ILF Samanvay, the Indian Languages Festival initiated by the India Habitat Centre, turns five in November 2015. Through this festival, we celebrate a nation with a pluralistic identity, which manifests itself through umpteen languages, spread over a vast and varied, culturally vibrant geographical land mass. It resonates with a rich multilingual, multicultural and evolving heritage that it has been carrying over centuries. Language here is embedded with nuances characteristic of the particular people who engage with it – it is expressive of their feelings, gestures and sentiments.
ILF Samanvay thus reaffirms the idea that one’s language not only conveys feelings but also connects one with so many, brings them together into a sense of harmony in diversity.
The relationship thus established through words is often beyond words, and hence the festival invokes in its unfolding many a transverbal discourse and practice. The festival engages with the original seamlessness of different times, separated only by the written histories. It incorporates within itself the act of conveying thoughts into word, melody, movement. Thus, the festival undertakes a major task of enabling a great learning of what a language attempts to convey in its entire complexity.
ILF Samanvay, the IHC Bharatiya Bhasha Mahotsav, is not a mere celebration of the diversity that Indian languages encapsulate. It is also a profound exploration and resurrection of a plethora of vernacular languages of India that find expression through innumerable literary and non-literary genres and personalities. The festival seeks to visit and explore the beauty of the Indian languages and the cultures that engender them. We endeavour to feed the incessant inquisitiveness of creative and inquiring minds across the country by establishing a sustainable platform to nurture the inexplicably wondrous relationship between the writer and her readers.
Hearty thanks to our creative director, team, advisors, authors and artists, well-wishers, partners and supporters who have come forward with their tremendous enthusiasm to help us with this initiative.
